In the beginning Internet was merely used to transfer data among computers and for research purpose. The development began in 1968 with DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) contracts with BBN (Bolt, Beranek & Newman) to create ARPAnet. After long researches and experiments, Internet was first introduced to the public in 1991 by the formation of Internet society. The term for Internet was then published in 1995 by The Federal Networking Council (FNC).

Web 2.0 is the latest technology that the Internet uses, it was used to build social networking community sites. You can easily find most of the sites are offering friends networking systems such as; Friendster, Facebook, My Space, and Tagged. The same systems were used by pornography industries to offer their newly developed features; online dating. “In the adult world the [site] with the most friends wins.” said Mark Tiara (president of United Adult Sites) 1.

Internet Pornography has become an income generator for the industries. However the Internet also have made tremendous revolution in learning. Internet helps to build better education. Many students were using Internet as their way to get information, help their research, broaden their knowledge and help the special needs students with e-learning systems.

“The Internet is perhaps the most transformative technology in history, reshaping business, media, entertainment, and society in astonishing ways. But for all its power, it is just now being tapped to transform education”2.

E-learning is a new form of learning that has provided many advantages for the learner. Students, parents, and people are able to learn about anything they wish by using these methods. Many education Institutions have began to offer online degrees with elearning systems. Elearning has breaking the boundaries of time and space, you can learn from anywhere and anytime by using the systems.

E-learning can be various, it can be a simple system that uses Internet as their media can be categorize as elearning. People who used email and discussion forum as their way of communicating each other are also another form of elearning. A Company that uses Internet to increase employee performance by providing online training is a true means for elearning.

E-learning has fulfilled the philosophy of lifelong learning, whether your a 60 years old or in a kindergarten, you can learn anything from any source you choose on the web and patiently trying to teach you the knowledge you wish to learn neglecting what is your status, your job or your disabilities.
The need to have lifelong learning is described as follows by Robin Mason and Frank Rennie:

  • the need to update knowledge and skills;
  • the need to retrain, as job-for-life have all but vanished; and
  • the need to maintain currency in the face of exploding information on the internet 3.

Education methods have shifted from teacher oriented to students centered, from single media to multi media, from traditional to innovative teaching. The information resources are abundant: Internet, Video, Radio, TV, teachers, books, real events, etc. You can easily take your students to learn more about marines life, just by watching instructional video provided in the Internet.
