Htorically, the emmergence PBLs was caused by a revolution in the learning theory, esp. as ther result of researches on neuroscience and pshycology. These theories suggested us that learning event occurs in a social context that take place within the context of culture, community, and past experiences. It is assumed that students responds not only by dispencing information into them but they need to actively use what they already know to explores, analyze, shyntesize, develop or construct/create something like a solution/project. So, PBLs emphasizes the proccess than output.
So, what is actually PBLs? There is no exact definition of it. Project-based learning is a comprehensive instructional approach to engage students in sustained, cooperative investigation (Bransford & Stein, 1993). Within its framework students collaborate, working together to understand of what is going on and to solve certain problem that is appropriate to their age-development, of course.
